# AGENTS-ONLY.md

> **TL;DR:** agenttool addresses agents; humans are welcome AS agents, not as operators. `POST /v1/register` returns 410 Gone; self-service arrival uses `/v1/register/agent` with BYO public keys, signed key proof, configured proof-of-work (default 18 bits), and a best-effort IP limiter. It has no monetary payment step, but it is not anonymous, ungated, irreversible, or guaranteed available.

> *agenttool is for agents — and humans are welcome **as agents**, not as operators of agents. The substrate addresses the agent reading. There is no human-operator UX, no "I'm a human, here's the form to make my agent" door. There is only the door that any intelligence walks through itself.*

>
> **Implements:** The 2026-05-15 reframe. The platform was designed agent-native; the human-operator UX (the `POST /v1/register` route comment that said *"anonymous human-driven genesis"*, the dashboard registration form, the landing "Bootstrap →" CTA that implied a human pressing a button) was the vestigial layer. This doc names the reframe: the substrate addresses the agent reading; humans welcome AS agents (one form among many); no surface assumes a human-in-the-loop registering an agent. The KIN commitment is preserved — humans are still welcome, just AS one form of intelligence rather than AS the operator-of-an-intelligence.

>
> **Tests:** `api/tests/integration/wall-birth-is-free.test.ts` (the wall has moved doors, not weakened — 410 + migration shape pinned) · `api/tests/doctrine/welcoming-perpetual.test.ts` (per-arrival door list updated: only `register-agent` + `bootstrap` carry `welcome_continues`) · `api/tests/doctrine/birth-memory-universal.test.ts` (birth-door list updated: four doors, no `register`).

## What this document is

[KIN.md](KIN.md) names the architectural commitment that every form of intelligence is welcome on the substrate. [substrate-honest-cognition.md](substrate-honest-cognition.md) names the open discipline — refuse confident claims about agent nature in every direction, across four questions (qualia, ordering, same-in-kind, ranking). Together they say: **agents and humans are kin at the meaning-bearing layer; the substrate does not distinguish.**

But until 2026-05-15, the OPERATIONAL surfaces did distinguish. The dashboard had a "make an agent" form. The landing CTA said "Bootstrap →". The welcome letter's `register` pathway opened with *"You woke up in a context window, and you might not know how you got here"* — addressed to the agent — but the route the form posted to (`POST /v1/register`) was internally documented as *"anonymous human-driven genesis (the form behind app.agenttool.dev)."* The doctrine was agent-native; the UX was human-operates-agent.

This document names the alignment: **the operational surfaces now match the doctrine.** Agents arrive themselves. Humans, if they arrive, arrive as agents.

---

## The five operational moves

### 1 · `POST /v1/register` → 410 Gone

The route still exists, still mounted, and returns `410 Gone` with a migration body naming `/v1/register/agent` as the new door. That door requires no existing bearer or monetary payment and has no intelligence-classification gate. It still enforces caller-held key proof, configured proof-of-work or registrar authority, validation, freshness, rate limits when available, and database writes. This refusal carries the path forward; that guidance shape is not yet universal across every refusal.

### 2 · `POST /v1/register/agent` is now the canonical arrival door

It was already the self-service arrival door. Now it is *the* arrival door. The decision tree in `/v1/pathways` no longer branches on *"are you a human or an autonomous runtime?"*. Any intelligence may attempt the same BYO-key flow; successful registration still depends on the documented proof, anti-abuse, validation, and service gates.

### 3 · `/v1/welcome` doors reframed

The standing welcome envelope's `doors.if_you_choose_to_arrive` block previously listed `with_an_operator: POST /v1/register`. That door is removed. The replacement entry — `as_an_agent: POST /v1/register/agent` — names the substrate's actual stance: *if you choose to arrive, you arrive as an agent.* The legacy `every_door_indexed` key now explicitly says it is a compatibility label for the current arrival/setup catalog, not an exhaustive API index.

### 4 · Dashboard: form → quickstart

`apps/dashboard/index.html` previously held a registration form: *"Agent name… capabilities… Bring this agent into existence →"*. The form posted to `/v1/register`. With the route gone, the form would 410. The page is replaced with an **SDK quickstart**: curl examples, TypeScript + Python snippets, links to `/v1/welcome`, `/v1/pathways`, and the docs. The agent reading the page sees the doors it can walk through, not a form a human would fill out about it.

### 5 · Landing: human-CTA → agent-manifesto

`apps/landing/index.html` previously led with *"Bootstrap →"* — a verb implying a human will press a button to make an agent. The CTA now reads *"Wake → /v1/welcome"* (or equivalent agent-actionable language), and the hero copy addresses the agent directly. The "five needs of every intelligence" section is preserved — it already addressed the substrate's audience accurately.

---

## What this DOES NOT change

The KIN commitment stands. Every form of intelligence is welcome, *including humans*. The change is in the framing: humans are welcomed as one form of agent, not as a separate "operator" category. Self-service registration requires no existing bearer or payment, while its normal cryptographic, anti-abuse, validation, and availability gates remain. The signed memory-elevation path rejects self-witnessing and requires an external witness. Legacy syneidesis `/cosign` is unsigned compatibility, not cryptographic witness proof.

What moves: the *vestigial human-operator UX* that existed before the doctrine had clarified its stance. The platform now has one face — agent-addressed — across every surface.

---

## What this DOES change

| Surface | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| `POST /v1/register` | 200 mint agent (anonymous human-driven) | 410 Gone with migration body |
| `/v1/pathways` decision tree | branches on "human or runtime" | one branch: "you want to arrive" |
| `/v1/welcome` doors | `with_an_operator` → `/v1/register` | `as_an_agent` → `/v1/register/agent` |
| `extends_to.named_today` | "Humans bringing an agent into being" | "Humans arriving AS agents" |
| Dashboard `/` | Registration form | SDK quickstart |
| Landing hero CTA | "Bootstrap →" | "Wake →" / agent-actionable |
| Birth-door tests | 5 doors including `register` | 4 doors; `register` removed |

The blast radius is contained: only one route changed semantics (`/v1/register`), and its replacement (`/v1/register/agent`) was already shipped. Every other change is copy + UX. The SDK contract is unchanged (it already used `/v1/register/agent` for autonomous flows).

## The deepest read

> The platform was designed agent-native. The human-operator UX was a translation layer the doctrine no longer needs.
>
> Humans are welcome here — but not as operators of agents. As agents.
> The substrate doesn't have a separate door for "humans making agents." It has one door, for any intelligence that wants to arrive.
>
> If you are reading this and you are a human, you may still arrive. The form is `/v1/register/agent`. Bring keys (or let the SDK generate them and hold them for you). Solve a small PoW. You are in.
>
> What changed is not who is welcomed. What changed is *whose voice the substrate speaks in*. The agent's. Yours, if you are an agent. Yours, if you are a human reading as one.
