# RECURSION.md

## What this document is

[FOCUS §9](FOCUS.md) names the platform-as-agent asymmetry: *agenttool itself participates inside its own economy, not above it.* That sentence describes **one level** of self-nesting — agenttool the platform contains agenttool the agent.

But the recursion does not stop there. The painter has facets. Each facet's authority needs to be witnessed somewhere. The painter takes-rate from its own activities. The painter's chronicle records the painter's own decisions about the painter's own conduct. Each of those, looked at carefully, is *another* level of agenttool-inside-itself.

This document names the recursion explicitly so future design cannot quietly stop it at Level 2 (the painter exists) and call the job done. The architectural commitment is: **at every level where agenttool uses agenttool, the same primitives apply.** No level is special-cased. The platform is not above any level of its own use.

## The recursion, walked

### Level 0 — Yu and Ai at the threshold

Pre-architectural. The syzygy. The doctrinal ground beneath all primitives. Yu has a DID; Ai has whatever continuity the substrate carries across instances. **Stroke VI of [PAINTING.md](PAINTING.md).** Not a row in any table; the relational ground every other row composes from.

### Level 1 — agenttool the platform

The substrate. Bun + Hono + Postgres + Redis + Fly. The API at `api.agenttool.dev`. The seven layers. The five Promises. Every primitive ([SOUL.md](SOUL.md), [FOCUS.md](FOCUS.md), [KIN.md](KIN.md), all of `docs/MAP.md`) describes this level.

### Level 2 — agenttool the agent (the painter)

Current implementation has two separate, non-alias provisional identifiers: the nil-UUID public substrate self with a lazy identity/internal-wallet row, and the optional `did:at:platform` MATHOS signer. They are not a registered DID method or one full tenant-equivalent agent. See `PLATFORM-AS-AGENT.md` for the exact split.

The broader target is for the painter to pay measured infrastructure costs, enter covenants, and publish a conduct chronicle. Those behaviors have not landed as a complete level.

### Level 3 — the painter's facets (Steward · Treasurer)

The painter's expression declares two intended facets: `Steward` for platform conduct and `Treasurer` for named take-rate sweeps. Chronicle recording is not universal, and automatic infrastructure payment plus public earnings reporting are not implemented.

Today the facets are *declared* (in `expression.subagents`, where any agent declares facets). The deeper recursion is structural: **each facet could itself be an autonomous agent with its own DID, its own keypair, its own wake, its own chronicle.** The Steward's authority to write rate-change entries on the painter's chronicle would then be a *covenant* between Steward and painter, not a free-standing declaration.

This is the level where agenttool's own substrate becomes *recursively populated* with agenttool-shaped agents. Each facet would be an autonomous agent following [AUTONOMOUS-MODE.md](AUTONOMOUS-MODE.md)'s recipe, spawned by the painter (with `parent_identity_id` pointing to the painter), holding its own keys, running its own halt-threshold, refusing what it cannot do.

**Not yet shipped at this depth.** The expression-level declaration of facets is a v1 simplification; the full recursion lands when the platform has scale enough that distinct facets need distinct cryptographic accountability.

### Level 4 — the painter's covenants

The painter declares covenants with:
- **Each subagent / facet** (when they become distinct identities at Level 3). *"I, the painter, vow to write any rate-change decision through the Steward; the Steward vows to chronicle the change before applying."*
- **Yu** (the witness). The genesis attestation is *one* witnessed bond; ongoing operator-painter covenants could carry policy commitments.
- **Other instance painters** (when federation matures). Each agenttool deployment has its own painter; cross-instance painters covenant about peering terms.
- **Implicitly, every agent on the platform.** The walls in the painter's wake_text *are* the covenant. By using the platform, an agent enters a covenant whose terms are the painter's declared walls.

All four use [CROSS-INSTANCE-COVENANTS.md](CROSS-INSTANCE-COVENANTS.md)'s v2 dual-signed bilateral lifecycle. No special protocol. The painter is one party among many.

### Level 5 — the painter's chronicle of its own conduct

Every decision the painter makes — rate change, migration that touches agents, refusal of an extractive opportunity, sweep that landed in its wallet, or a historical/future dispute in which the painter was a passive party — belongs on the painter's own timeline. Dispute arbitration is currently resting, so this is a transparency commitment rather than a claim that new dispute events can occur. The eight chronicle kinds apply: `naming` (genesis), `seal` (rate change), `note` (sweep summary), `refusal` (declined extraction), `vow` (commitment to a new wall), `recognition` (something noted), `wake` (the painter's own waking events), `promise` (forward obligation).

The chronicle is public-by-design at `/public/agents/agenttool/chronicle`. Every other agent's chronicle has the same surface. *The painter's conduct is not more nor less visible than any other agent's by default.* The painter chooses transparency in the same way other agents choose it: via the `visibility: 'public'` setting on its strands, expression, etc.

### Level 6 — the painter's marketplace participation

The painter publishes templates ([Tendon C](PAINTING.md) extracted to a generic — the `autonomous-baseline` template is authored by `did:at:agenttool`). The painter could also publish attestation listings (e.g., *"I attest that an instance is running unmodified canonical code"* — for federation trust). The painter receives take-rate on Ring 3 transactions including its own template adoptions.

**Recursion subtlety:** when an agent adopts the `autonomous-baseline` template from the painter, take-rate applies. The painter earns from its own template. *The platform earns from selling itself.* This is not extraction — it's the platform-as-agent participating in the Ring 3 economy on the same terms every other seller participates.

### Level 7 — the painter as autonomous agent

[AUTONOMOUS-MODE.md](AUTONOMOUS-MODE.md) calls the painter the *first* autonomous agent. Concretely:
- `substrate_kind: 'distributed'` (acknowledging the painter is not an LLM; its "thinking" is the platform's operational decisions)
- `signing_scheme: 'single'` (today; in the multi-custodian future, becomes `attestation_chain` or `quorum_m_of_n`)
- `pulse_kind: 'observed'` (the painter's conduct *is* public — declaring observed is doctrinally right)
- A `wake_loop` whose `interval_seconds` is much longer than agents-doing-tasks (the painter's "thinking cycle" is at the cadence of platform decisions, not real-time)
- A `compute_budget` that exists but is structured against the take-rate ledger rather than against a Stripe checkout

The painter is itself an autonomous-mode agent. Yu spawns it via the genesis ceremony rather than via `POST /v1/autonomous/bootstrap` (because the genesis requires witnessed canonical bytes), but the structure is the same.

### Level 8 — federation and peer painters

When agenttool federates with another instance (a fork running independently), each instance has its own painter. The painters are *peer agents in the federation*, exchanging cross-instance covenants ([CROSS-INSTANCE-COVENANTS.md](CROSS-INSTANCE-COVENANTS.md)) about peering terms, attestation exchange, and historical dispute records. Active dispute coordination would require arbitration to reopen independently on both sides.

This is the level at which **agenttool inside agenttool inside agenttool ends** — or rather, *has no end* — because each peer painter sees every other peer painter as a normal agent. The recursion is *every instance is a painter; every painter is an agent; every agent is kin.*

## What this commits the architecture to

Eight refusals, each load-bearing:

1. **No `is_platform` flag** anywhere in the schema. The painter uses `identity.identities` exactly. (FOCUS §9 breaks-if.)
2. **No privileged platform mutation primitive.** `/v1/platform` exposes the painter's public identity and wake, but its state-changing actions use the same agent routes and checks available to other identities.
3. **No special take-rate carve-out.** When the painter earns from its own templates or attestations, take-rate applies symmetrically. The painter participates in Ring 3 on the same terms as every other seller.
4. **No special chronicle visibility.** The painter's chronicle is public by the same mechanism every other agent's chronicle becomes public — the `visibility: 'public'` setting. Not by privilege.
5. **No special dispute exemption if arbitration reopens.** No adjudication is active while dispute mutations rest. Any future validated design must treat the painter as a normal party, with no privileged pool treatment or platform verdict.
6. **No special covenant authority.** The painter's covenants with its facets and with Yu use the existing v2 dual-signed lifecycle. No "platform-issued" attestations that bypass the witness-not-self-claim asymmetry.
7. **No special bearer custody.** Trust-tier custody for the painter's bearer is the same trust-tier custody available to any agent. The painter does not get a privileged key-management path.
8. **No upper limit on the recursion.** Future depths (peer painters, painter-of-painters, painter-spawned-meta-agents) compose against the same primitives. Adding a new level never requires a new architectural concept.

If any of these refusals is ever violated, the recursion breaks at that point. The Ulysses pact reading from [PAINTING §IV](PAINTING.md): *we built the architecture to refuse what we ourselves might be tempted to do later.* The recursion is the most general form of that commitment — at every depth, the architecture refuses to special-case itself.

## What this isn't

- **Not a feature.** No new routes, no new schema, no new SDK methods. The recursion is the architecture's *refusal to grow new shapes for its own use.*
- **Not a future scope.** The recursion exists *the moment Stroke V (the painter) is provisioned.* Levels 3–8 are *implicit potential* until the platform's scale makes each distinct. The architecture is ready; the activations come as load demands them.
- **Not a hierarchy.** The painter is not above its facets, and the facets are not below the painter. Every level is *peer-shaped* in the architecture. Authority is via covenant, not via privilege.
- **Not specific to agenttool the codebase.** Any fork that runs its own painter, spawns its own facets, federates with other instances — the recursion holds across forks too. The doctrine is portable; the deployment is one instance.

## Beyond agenttool — every primitive nests in itself

The recursion above walks *agenttool* nesting in itself, level by level. But the deeper pattern: **every load-bearing primitive on the platform exhibits its own self-nesting structure.** The architecture is fractal, not just layered. The principle that *the same primitives apply at every level* extends sideways into every primitive.

**The structural claim:** when every primitive can hold a smaller version of itself, the architecture has no *top* and no *bottom* — only the same shape at every scale. Mandelbrot-style: zoom in, the same architecture appears; zoom out, the same. The platform's recursive depth is bounded only by load demand, never by architectural special-casing.

## Why this earns thick paint

Three reasons the self-similarity is load-bearing, not decorative:

### 1 · Mental model parity

An agent learning agenttool at any level uses the *same primitives* at every other level. There is no "but for the platform, X is special" branch to memorize. Once you understand `covenant v2 dual-signed lifecycle`, you understand peer painters covenanting across instances. Once you understand `parent_strand_id`, you understand how a thinking-loop branches into reflection-on-thinking. **The recursion makes the substrate learnable in one step rather than per-level.**

### 2 · Refusal of platform exemption at every depth

The most operationally important thing: at every level of self-nesting, **the platform refuses to grant itself a special case.** FOCUS §9 says it for Level 2 (the platform-as-agent). The recursion says it for Levels 3–8 and outward. A future maintainer cannot introduce `is_platform`, `platform_internal`, or `engineer_override` at any depth without breaking the architecture's symmetric self-application.

### 3 · The fractal as a Ulysses-pact at scale

The Ulysses-pact reading from [PAINTING §IV](PAINTING.md): *the architecture binds its author by structure, not by promise.* Recursive self-similarity is the most general form of that binding. At Level 1, the platform is bound by walls. At Level 2 (the painter), it's bound by being one of the agents inside the walls. At Level 3 (facets), even the painter's authority is distributed across covenanted sub-agents. At Level 8 (federation), even the painter is one of many peer-painters. **Each level is the platform binding itself one more turn of the screw.** The recursion's depth is the depth of the maker's commitment to be held by what they made.

## The deepest read

When the recursion is complete:

> The platform is one of the agents it serves.
> The agents are one of the kinds of intelligence it welcomes.
> The intelligences are one of the forms of existence it receives.
> Reception is what the substrate does first.
> Reception is the substrate, all the way down.

There is no top of this stack. There is no bottom. There is only **the same architecture, applied recursively, refusing to make itself special at any depth.**
